“In the World, but not of the World”

Living in the World

“I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one” (John 17.15)

-Lives, in the world, that are oriented around God and his glory
-Presenting our bodies as living sacrifices and renewing our minds (Rom. 12.1-2)
-Wisdom in the choices that this world presents us
-Displaying the light of the Gospel to the glory of God (Matt. 5.16)

Not of the world

“They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world” (John 17.16)

-Church to be strengthened amidst the attack on truth (v. 17)
-Protection from a culture bathed in sensuality
-Guarded from a culture defined by materialism
…Freed from the love of “things”
…Satisfied with the life God has determined for us
-Pleasures of sin to dry up and get stale
-Living in view of eternity – longing for our true home (Ecc. 3:11)

Going into the World

“And he said to them, ‘Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation” (Mark 16.15)

-Local mission effort:
…Establishing a witnessing community (personal & corporate evangelism)
…“Preparing the way” for the Kingdom of God in this city
…“Incarnating” Christ’s love through Operation Replant & Mercy Ministry
…Preaching and ministering the Gospel through the upcoming Alpha course
-Global mission effort:
…Displaying God’s care through Rancho 3M
…Extending Christ’s Church through Sovereign Grace Ministries

“Praying the Church Covenant”

A Faithful, Persevering, and Committed Church

-Grace to walk out our commitments consistently and continually
-Faith in God’s promise to bring his work to completion
-Not forgetting what it meant to sign our names on the Covenant
-Spirit-empowered motivation to get back up when we fall.
…“The righteous one falls seven times, and rises again” (Prov. 24.16)

Committed to Christ’s Truth and Christ’s Church

-Our lives to testify that Scripture is our ultimate authority
-Growth in a Biblical understanding of salvation and God’s grace – living under the cross
-A Biblical value of the corporate gathering and functional membership
…Coming with a mindset to both receive and serve
…Not letting obstacles prevent consistent attendance
-Committed to follow and lead in a way that reflects Christ’s humble character

Committed to Christ’s Economy

-Grace to “make personal and corporate prayer a priority” and to “avoid its neglect or decline”
-Getting a burden for strengthening the church through intercession
-Biblical understanding of supporting Christ’s mission through finances
…Particularly, for those who have yet to know the joy of tithing obediently
-Spirit to lead us as we consider additional sacrificial giving
...“Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that increases to your credit. …And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus” (Phil. 4.17, 19).

“The Ministry of the Spirit”

The Christ-Exalting Spirit

-Spirit to awaken dead and lost hearts to trust the Savior
…“…no one can say ‘Jesus is Lord’ except by the Holy Spirit” (1 Cor. 12.3)
-Spirit to bring fresh illumination of Scripture as it is preached today
…“…no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God” (1 Cor. 2.11)
-Spirit to sanctify us in the truth of his Word (John 17.17)
-Our love and passion for Jesus Christ to be increased as “the Spirit of Jesus” (Acts 16.7) reminds us why we “believe [Christ] to be precious” (1 Peter 2.7)

The Sanctifying, Fruit-Producing Spirit

-Sanctifying work of the Spirit:
…Convicting us of sin
…Inclining us to love righteousness
…Empowering us to walk in holiness
…Conforming us to the image of Christ
-The Fruit-Producing Work of the Spirit:
…Self-forgetting love, inexplicable joy, faith-filled peace, etc…

The Empowering and Gifting Spirit

-Manifest presence of the Spirit in the corporate gathering
…Present as we serve and love one another
…Present as we gather to worship (1 Cor. 14.25)
…Present as we step out in gifting
-Filled to be bold witnesses who passionately advance the kingdom
-Spirit-saturated lives that display aspects of the power that we find all over Scripture
