Praying the Preached Word

This morning’s targets focus on asking God to help us as we apply the sermons from the past two weekends. Pray that we would be people who are…

…Loving Others Sacrificially

“Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who…” (Phil. 2.5ff).

-Daily commitment to “count others more significant” than ourselves (Phil. 2.3)
-Seeking out and eagerly embracing opportunities to serve
-Cultivating a culture of submission (first to Christ and then to husbands, parents, church leaders, employers, government, etc.)
-Sacrificial love to mark our relationships – bearing one another’s burdens through serving, prayer and intercession, and words of encouragement from the Scriptures

…Living with a View for Duplication

“But the Word of God increased and multiplied” (Acts 12.24)

-“Fishers of men” – by the Spirit, reaching out and gathering in lost souls
-The mature to invest in the next generation and “pass the baton of faith”
-God to give us a burden for specific people to disciple

-Lift up whatever other issues the Lord lays on your heart

“How to Pray for the Soul – Yours or Another’s” by John Piper.

For thoughtful people, how they pray for the soul is governed by how they believe God acts. So, for example, if they believe God changes people’s souls so that they make new and right choices, then they will ask God to make those soul-changes through evangelism and nurture. But not everybody is thoughtful about the way they pray. They don’t think about what view of God is behind their praying. (keep reading).

“Growing”

Growing in Discipleship

“By this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples” (John 15.8).

-Growth in godliness and fruit of the Spirit
-Growth in passion for truth and love for the Word
-Growth in unity and the practice of biblical fellowship
-Growth in expressiveness in corporate worship
-Growth in experience of spiritual gifts

Growing in Size

“But the Word of God increased and multiplied” (Acts 12.24).

-LCC Building Project (today is our business meeting):
…Final six months of construction to remain on course
…Against major difficulties or unexpected expenses
…Sustaining grace for Pete Schefferstein, Norman Voelkel, Tom Kummer, and Richard Dupont (among others)
…Fresh surge of faith for sacrificial giving
…Peace with our surrounding neighbors

Growing in Number

“…and the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved” (Acts 2.47).

-“Fishers of men” – by the Spirit, reaching out and gathering in lost souls
-Many to hear the call of the Savior and respond during our corporate gatherings.
-Lord to continue to bring wandering sheep into our church to be nourished and strengthened.

“Living Sacrifices”

Disciples of Sacrifice

“Then he told his disciples, ‘If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me’” (Matt. 16.24)

-Freedom from the world’s worship of self (“self-improvement,” “self-esteem,” etc.)
-Committed to crucifying our pride daily
-Longing to see Christ’s mission extended – at whatever cost to us
-Welcoming settings of “He must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3.30)
-Released from the idols of comfort and ease

Self-Sacrifice in the Home

“Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his [family]” (John 15.13)

-Husbands to love their wives “as Christ loved the church, and gave himself up for her” (Eph. 5.25)
-Wives to find fulfillment in joyful submission to their husbands
-Parents (particularly fathers) to disciple their children – even when it is resisted
-Children to honor their parents with obedience and love
-Singles to plan ways to support their family and the families in the church

Self-Sacrifice in the Church

“By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers” (1 John 3.16)

-Seeking out and eagerly embracing opportunities to serve
-Coming with hearts for the “spiritual worship” of presenting our bodies (Rom. 12.1)
-Generous giving that declares, “I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord” (Phil. 3.8)
-Spirit of love to mark our relationships – bearing one another’s burdens through serving, prayer and intercession, and words of encouragement from the Scriptures
